Elle et Lui - June Update

Man! We had a great time this June.

Jen not only applied and obtained all her business licenses and permits, but she also released her first collection and got her website up and running too.

Feels so good to be productive.

I swear I'm going to write a blog post about this
collection and my website soon...
Alexis got his work authorization in the mail.

Now he can find a new job - woo hoo!

Jen spent a week in sunny and warm Southern CA with French friend Addy in Palm Springs and then visiting with her Grandmother.

So relaxing!

Excuse the focus on my white butt...
hopefully by end of summer it will be tanner.
Alexis met Jen in LA and got to go to his first American High School graduation where he got to meet some of Jen's former students.

It was very different for him, as he is not used to so much pomp and circumstance around graduations.

Jen got to catch up with a few of her former students, but was thrilled to catch up with this one in particular.

Mickey is an inspirational young woman and we both have a mutual admiration and fondness for each other. So excited to see what the future holds for her as she heads off to college in Austin, TX with a full scholarship to play soccer.

Both Jen and Alexis then both headed to Live Oak Music Festival to meet up with friends for a weekend of nature and live music.

It was hotter and dustier than previous years but they still enjoyed spending some relaxing time back at their wedding venue.

They have enjoyed one relaxing weekend at home but are looking ahead to a July full of weekend trips and a two week road trip at the end that will bring them home in early August.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

This is not us. I wish it were because it is super cute, although as I have mentioned before, I'm not super patriotic. And le husband would have something to say about it being an American flag and not a French one. Silly le husband!

Jen in June

What a fun month...this is what I was doing:

READING: Housekeeping

WORKING: On completing Bohemian Fiesta Collection

LISTENING: Acoustic Café

MAKING: Cute little pj shorts out of old pants that became high waters

LOVING: Summer days by the pool in Palm Springs

Monday! It's a Party!

Mondays never feel like a party. But in attempt to have a better attitude about Mondays I am posting my favorite party décor ideas every Monday to put us in the party mood so we can shake, boogie, and smile through the rest of the week.

This Monday my faves are around the theme of 4th of July since that is on Saturday. I have to admit I'm not very patriotic, and 4th of July décor tends to be a bit kitschy for my taste so I think I found 5 options here to create a very classy 4th of July party.

Top to Bottom:

1. Blue glassware and vases with red flowers for the table

2. Containers for flatware, napkins, & more made with recycled containers and some scrapbook paper

3. Hang some big red, white, and blue paper lanterns over the table in a cluster

4. Vintage dessert table with Coca-Cola six-pack (nothing more American than Coca-Cola), apothecary jars with red, white, and blue candy, and that cake is so cool!

5. Very classy 4th of July banner you can buy here, or would be very easy to make with some scraps

Friday Inspirations & Favorites - 6.26.15

I was out on vacation for a bit but now I am back and here to tell you what put a smile on my face this week.

- Orange is the New Black, 3rd Season on Netflix. Watch out! Not sure how I will function until I watch it all the way through.

- My local neighborhood yoga studio, Adeline Yoga. It's Iyenga yoga which is amazing. They got me up doing a head stand for the first time this week (against a wall that is).

-Scrumptious and refreshing beet gazpacho soup. Going to try this recipe here.

This one is diluted with a broth. Maybe veggie broth?
-Relaxing weekends in Palm Springs. I mean what could be better?

-Overall sense of accomplishment and pride upon crossing off a huge task...finishing my website.

-Amazing inspiration coming from the blog thehousethatlarsbuilt.com

Friday Inspiration & Favorites - 6.5.15

- This adorable little boy who turns 4 today.

Jonny, my nephew
- Delicious blackberries from my neighbor's garden.

- The Business Assistance Center in Oakland that finally got me on the right path yesterday for applying for all my business permits. Yay!

- Art therapy, mandala, anti-stress coloring book that I bought in France (they are all the rage). I just finished this one this week. They are super addictive. I want to start a new one but I'm trying to hold off so I can get some stuff done. It appears you can buy the same one that I have here at Barnes & Noble.

- This space that we got a tour through last weekend. It's called the Compound Gallery and it's just a few blocks from my house in Oakland. This is the artist's workshop area and I've been drooling over being able to have a space like this to work in ever since.

- My new do. Finally got the lob I've been waiting for.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe - Thoughts after a few weeks

I sincerely hope you aren't over hearing me talk about this capsule wardrobe. Ha! I also sincerely hope it won't take 3 whole blog posts to write about in the future. I could've written about it in one, big, monstrous blog post but I didn't want to put anyone, including myself, through that.

I do have a lot of thoughts on all this, especially since it is the first capsule wardrobe I have ever done.

Initial Reaction

Looking at my closet when it was all over, I had two first initial reactions.

1) Wow! Look at all this space I now have. Now my husband doesn't have to dig through one jam-packed closet for his own stuff and can spread out a bit.

I was able to fit all of my wardrobe into the two sections of closet that I have. All of the shirts and sweaters and skirts in one section and the other section that also is housing all my fancy dresses and coats that I'm not storing away also houses my two wardrobe dresses, my pants, and my shoes. This means that my dresser houses none of my capsule wardrobe except my shorts. Otherwise it has my pjs, workout clothes, basics, undies and socks, and the few camping essentials I stored in there. And one measly little drawer for my poor husband. But anyway, this is a huge victory.

Section of Closet for Dresses & Coats
Pants & Shoes
Boots - C'mon, Uggs don't count towards my 37 :)
2) There is a style, and it looks good. Looking at the clothes I chose all hanging next to each other I could see a very consistent style. And, for once looking at my closet it looked cohesive and like a wardrobe I'd envy if I saw it posted up on the internet. I have a lot of browns/beiges, white, blue and grey. And just a few pops of color here and there: red, orange, and yellow mainly. Everything falls into the more Gap preppy style. The basic, casual look mainly. Now that I don't work in an office I really don't need any professional clothes. The one thing it is lacking a bit is my more bohemian style. That exists only in accents like a possible sweater or my jewelry which I have started to notice lately reflects my style much better than my wardrobe does and I know I'm much pickier when I select jewelry.

I got style!
Delayed Reactions

Now that I have worn this wardrobe a bit there are a few things I have noticed.

1) Why did I choose 3 shorts and 2 short skirts? I initially thought about not counting shorts as part of the 37. And to be honest, it's not like I'm pissed they are taking up precious space because even with them there I still have plenty, but I live in the Bay Area. C'mon. I don't think I have EVER worn shorts here. I own shorts specifically for the times when I am not here. Like when we go camping, go to Southern CA, go on other some sort of warm vacation. It is very unlikely shorts will ever be a part of my normal wardrobe while living in the Bay Area. The sad thing is the 3 pairs of short were narrowed down from something like 6 pairs of shorts. If I only wear shorts when I'm on vacation, why do I need so many? Well, I'm not prepared to just toss them all but I am thinking shorts MAY not make it into the 37 in the future or if so, only just for summer if I tend to be vacationing a lot (like I am this summer).

Those dang shorts, kickin' it in my PJ drawer
2) It's not so hard living with this few clothes. Especially since most days I am not even choosing anything out of my wardrobe but just wearing workout clothes or if anything, a shirt from my basics with jeans. Right now, in fact, I'm wearing a workout shirt with jeans and flip flops.

3) As great as my style looked at the beginning, now I feel a little "eh". I wish maybe I had tried to make cohesive outfits with everything so I knew what looked good with what. I realized this as I was trying to pack for a weekend away. I still find myself throwing things together that even though they are nice items that I picked for my wardrobe, they don't necessarily go well with each other. I still don't feel as "put together" as I would like. But I think this is a little bit of me starting to fine tune my tastes with this project. I realize as much as I have all these basics, that I need maybe a little more flavor in there. As I mentioned before, I do have some plans on buying some new things here and there to add, and they are very pre-meditated purchases. Being able to shop for and fulfill all these pieces at the beginning of the wardrobe season may not be a reality for me until Fall or maybe Winter. Anyway, as I mentioned before, I believe that in the meantime or maybe even for a full year my wardrobes will be very experimental as I try to work things in my wardrobe and quickly toss them when they didn't get worn once in a season, but...

4) I do notice there are a few things I haven't worn yet in the few weeks that I have been with this wardrobe. I don't know if I will be so quick to toss them. They may need to make it through a full years rotation to know for sure that they aren't right. One shirt I'm thinking of in particular. Well maybe the weather just hasn't been right or I didn't integrate it into a wardrobe with the best items to accompany it. It's all a learning process and as you can see, I'm up for it, have a lot of thoughts on it, and am very ready to do it my way anyway. :)

What I do want to say though is that I would recommend people to try this. It is amazing how little you can live in. I do wonder if I worked at an office where the same people saw me every day, if this would be a lot harder, and it very possibly could be. But I would want to challenge myself even then and see if I could just realize that looking good every day but rotating stuff more often is better than looking half thrown together but with something different to wear every day of the month.

The best part of it though is that if we were this intentional and conscious about our likes, our dislikes, our style, what we bought, and what we selected in our wardrobe, it would not only save us time and money in the long run, but also would create a whole lot less textile waste on our planet. That is something I have been a huge advocate for for many years. I guess this is just my new experiment in that arena.

Jen in May

This is what I was doing in May 2015:

WATCHING: Cheers

WORKING: On Spanish Fiesta decorations

WEARING: Short boots from a store called André in France

LOVING: Parties with my SLO friends

Elle et Lui - May Update

Elle et Lui translates to "She & Him". It is the monthly update I have been e-mailing to our close family every month to let everyone know what we were up to in the past month. It's nice because not all our family are big facebookers nor do we post much on facebook so it's a little more personalized.

I have decided that I will post it here too, it may variate a bit from what I send the family because some things the family doesn't know, you may already know since I post here much more than I e-mail our fam.

Without further ado...Elle et Lui for May:

Jen started tutoring a student in Spanish on the side.

Teaching is fun, especially when it's one-on-one.

Alexis experimented with making some blueberry jam.

It didn't turn out so well.

They started the month out with a yard sale to try to get rid of excess junk.

Neighbor kitty Lilly-Bell      was a big help.

They went up to a small Sonoma town called Glen Ellen on Mother's Day to visit beautiful Jack London Historic Park.

They also enjoyed some yummy oysters and martinis.

Jen started making a bunch of homemade household products such as hand soap and body soap for the shower in attempts to be greener and healthier.

     More to come on
     this later.

Alexis went windsurfing almost every weekend that we stayed in the Bay Area.

     So athletic!

They both enjoyed a busy but fun weekend in SLO for Memorial Day.

Brunch at the Cliff's was one of the highlights.

Jen had a Bloody Mary and salad.

Alexis had a coffee and clam chowder.

They are both looking forward to heading to Live Oak Music Festival in June and to spend some time back at their wedding venue with sun, fun, friends, and music.

It's the official start to summer.
